THE DEPOP GIRLIES HAVE LOST THE PLOT.
It’s gotten just a touch insane.
Since thrifting has become part of the ‘cool girl’ lifestyle, prices have skyrocketed, sellers are running amok with outrageously unrealistic prices, and normal people are confused as to why Forever 21 shorts are going for almost $300. Yes. I said $300.

“rare” or delulu?
I thought it was timely for Dazed’s article to bring up Brandy Melville, a fast fashion brand whose sizes have been extremely questionable since it hit the sales floors. Brandy’s prices usually range at about $15-16 for one top. Not crazy, especially considering surging clothing prices these days. But apparently, people seem to be foaming at the mouth to pay more than $300 for ‘rare’ deadstock items. I clicked on the listing. There was an offer sent in to the seller. I hope that offer was for $30, because that’s what this jacket is worth. MAXIMUM.
And it’s not just fast fashion brands.
It’s lower-tier designer brands such as Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Guess, Juicy, and whatever else you can think of in that mid-affordable price range. I saw a vintage Ralph Lauren skirt on depop the other day for $248. I love Ralph Lauren, seriously? You may as well just find it yourself at GoodWill for less than $10, because that’s what sellers are finding it for.
The usual annoyingly-lucky-at-the-bins Depop seller will find a “luxury” brand item at the thrift for somewhere between literally $1 and $10 and then proceed to resell it for anywhere between $40 and, as we’ve unfortunately seen, more than $200.
But, like, why do i care?
If you’ve got the funds to spend an egregious amount of money on a skirt from the bins, first of all, f*ck you. Second of all, you’re insane.
For the normies, the girlies just trying to score a deal, I see you! I am you! And if you were wondering why this is a bigger problem, I’ll tell you.
Once people see crazily-priced items, they’ll trickle right back down into fast fashion.
Brands like Shein, Urban Outfitters, Edikted, H&M… even the nice, innocent girls aren’t safe. The whole point behind apps and websites like Depop, Vinted, ThreadUp, etc. is for people to find unique clothing for normal prices, right? Almost.
It’s to help out our friend, the environment. To encourage sustainability.
Every time you buy a piece of used clothing, it’s one piece you’re saving from being thrown in the dump, one piece you’re buying recycled instead of mass-produced, one piece you’re giving a new home. Having a unique piece no one else has at a good price is just a perk. Pretty cool, right?
And because I love you, I’m going to provide you with 3 of my favorite depop sellers whose prices won’t completely break the bank.
I’ve ordered from Lily dozens of times and I always enjoy what I get. Her details in sizing really help you figure out what will fit and what won’t. She’s definitely at the top of my list ;)
Kate has such cute stuff and her prices are fair. I’ve ordered from her a couple of times and I highly recommend her!
Mikayla has such good prices and she’ll even send you offers if you like her items! I’ve bought from her before and loveee what I have. Check her out!
Soo…
Do your due diligence on price checking items you see that may look a liiitle crazy to you. It’s worth it. And don’t give up and go to Shein, because I will personally hunt you down if you do.
