WHAT DOES MELANIA TRUMP’S iNAUGURATION OUTFIT say?

Contrary to popular belief, fashion does in fact have a place in politics. It not only serves as both a form of expression and art, but also holds the powerful ability to communicate one’s identity, beliefs, and values. From time to time, public figures have made specific fashion choices to showcase their beliefs. This has been done very loudly, like AOC at the Met Gala (pictured below), or very quietly, like our politicians wearing red or blue at debates to show their solidarity with whatever party they align with. What we don’t always see or talk about is the quieter fashion statements, especially those made by the First Ladies of our good ole (not really) USA.

Before we get into anything regarding this year’s election at all, let me make something clear:

i f**king hate donald trump and everything he and his minions stand for.

now that that is out of the way, Let’s break it down.

The dress was custom-made by an independent designer, Adam Lippes. Lippes is born and raised American, established in New York with his own company since 2004. Going the “All-American” route instead of choosing a non-American classic designer like Dolce or Prada would make sense with Trump’s campaign and ideas of nationalism.

trouble in TYRANNY? *cough* I mean, trouble in paradise?

Obviously, one of the largest (and arguably, most goofy-looking) parts of Melania’s inauguration outfit is her boat-style hat. If you’re on TikTok at all, you may have noticed several clips of Melania avoiding even touching her husband; she often pulls away from him, refuses to hold his hand, and walks with noticeable distance behind or in front of him. Her hat really sold this seeming disdain for her spouse when his attempted kiss was rejected by the circumference of her hat. I don’t blame her. All jokes aside…

It’s hard to say what exactly melania’s look “means”.

Though fashion is a form of art and expression, it is not always easily interpretable. Gen Z has labeled this look the Hamburglar. The Guardian has referred to it as, “Authoritative Chic”. My mom has called it ugly. (She’s right.) We all have different opinions.

I hate these short chats, but unfortunately, this week, I have been plagued with some viral illness that I wish I had morphine for. Until next Saturday, my loves.

Xoxo,
