TRENDS OF 2024 WRAPPED
bows, leopard print, and skinny jeans, oh my!
In 2024, we trended it up. TikTok amplified coquette core to the max, the girls were freaking out when Alix Earle herself wore — what’s that — SKINNY JEANS???? And, how could we forget about everyone seemingly discovering leopard print and the color red for the first time? Here are some of the largest fashion trends of this year and what I think of them.
BOWS, BOWS, BOWS… & COQUETTE CORE
Talk about overkill.
If there is anything the TikTok girlies will do, it is beat a dead horse. Brutally. Unfortunately, bows were a victim of this. (Or honestly… maybe fortunately.) First it was bows in your hair. Then it was bows being used to hold tiny tops together. Soon after that, they completely took over. It was the bow apocalypse. And it all came from MF coquette core. For those of you who don’t know, “coquette core” is basically the general public salivating over a ballerina ‘lifestyle.’ Everything pink and white, BOWS, pearls, pastels, etc. I fell victim to coquette core my sophomore year, actually, when it was just a trend. Not a trend of monstrous proportions. See below.
Yeah. Yikes. If you couldn’t tell, I had a sneaker phase too. A touchhh out of place with the pink and girly theme of the rest of the room. Anyway. I don’t hate coquette core or bows necessarily, it’s just that once they got into the hands of TikTok, they got a little ridiculous. Moving on…
Leopard print
Talk about overkill CENTRAL.
This one hurts. As I said before, it was like we were discovering leopard print for the first time. Like, leopard print has existed for as long as there have been leopards. Duh. What I’m trying to say is, I think we are forgetting that leopard print has been a staple. For a long time. That was until, influencers decided that every single article of clothing in our closets has to be leopard print, and if it wasn't, you just “didn’t get it.” No girl, I think I get it — it’s just not good. Things really got crazy when the Wales Bonner x Adidas collab came out. They retailed for $200 and are now being resold at more than $600. (The sneaker industry is another blog topic. We’ll get there.) Needless to say, leopard print was overdone this year. However, that doesn’t mean we should abandon it. Done correctly, it can look chic and sexy. So please, do it correctly.
The skinny jean
Hear me out.
Contrary to popular belief, Alix Earle did not single-handedly bring back skinny jeans from their 2014 grave. Models off-duty have been wearing them for years, regardless of where they stand on the trend meter. However, Alix did cause quite a stir among fellow TikTok users. Some viewers have massively criticized the trend, while others have praised it. What do I think? Well, just like every other piece of clothing, there is a good way to style skinny jeans and a very, very bad way to style them. This Vogue article perfectly exemplifies the best ways to style skinny jeans in 2024. Take a peek if you’re interested in feeling that Tumblr nostalgia from teen-hood.
Jane birkin-ifying
A trend I can get behind.
The reason I’m not a huge trend person is because, admittedly, I don’t want what everyone else has. I know I’m not alone in that. Walking into a college bar with an Edikted top that like, 90 other girls are also wearing is just not giving. If I had the funds, I’d be wearing archival. And this is why I adore this trend — you can add your own unique touch to it, which, in my humble opinion, is what true fashion is. For the newbies, “Jane Birkin-ifying” your bag or purse is decorating your straps, handles and other hardware with scarves, charms, etc. I highly suggest that we all jump on this and make it a staple instead of a trend. After all, Jane Birkin herself is doing it.
Fun tights
Also a trend I can get behind. Asf!
Fun looking tights honestly may be one of my favorite trends of 2024. It is such an adorable way to spice up your black mini skirts or leather shorts, especially when it’s f*cking freezing. Though they aren’t the warmest layer, they’re still a layer, and in my book, that’s better than nothing. Plain black tights can also totally add a chicness factor to your winter looks. If no one else is wearing fun tights next year, I still will be!
